\u201cIt<\/em> is enough to introduce a little truth to the lie so that it is not only believable, but irrefutable”<\/em>, thinks Tom\u00e1s Nevinson <\/strong>in the last excellent novel by Javier Marias<\/strong>, which I am reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this point everyone already knows that the Cathedral of Burgos<\/a><\/strong> in July has planned to replace the three doors of its facade of Santa Mar\u00eda<\/strong>, made of wood from the eighteenth century, with other bronze ones by Antonio L\u00f3pez<\/a><\/strong>, Prince of Asturias Award of the Arts in 1985, to celebrate its 800th anniversary<\/strong>. This slight intervention in our 21st century, of reversible character, follows the tradition of performances throughout its history, from the artistic sensitivities of each era, which have given the cathedral its undeniable historical and half-breed profile, as something alive and reflection of time, so frequent in the history of cathedrals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are similar backgrounds such as the Cathedral of Reims<\/strong>, with new stained glass windows by Marc Chagall <\/strong>in 1974 and others by Imi Knoebel<\/strong> in its eighth centenary, or like the Door of Death<\/strong> by Giacomo Manz<\/strong>, one of the most beautiful of St. Peter of the Vatican<\/strong>, with which those of Antonio L\u00f3pez <\/strong>have a certain affinity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Faced with this initiative, the Burgos artist Juan Vallejo de Lope <\/strong>(who I did not know) has launched a campaign against it, getting many signatures and a series of purist reviews that reminded me of what was said by a supporting character of “Independencia”,<\/em><\/strong> Javier Cercas’ <\/strong>latest novel: “People who always think the same thing do not think”.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I curiously read Vallejo’s<\/strong> manifesto, to form a better opinion, but I had to put it down early in the face of such an untidy text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • It begins with a free global disallowment of the project by calling it “horror vacui”<\/em>–fear of emptiness-<\/em> and it continues with a series of disqualifications (running over, speculation, attack, aberration, breakage)<\/em>, at the rate of two per paragraph. Too many and too extreme to be true, and the representation of the majority’s opinion was also repealed.<\/li>
  • It is not very rigorous in indicating the themes<\/strong> of the doors (he confuses Jesus <\/em>with God the Father<\/em>) and the models<\/strong> used (he affirms a debatable self-portrait <\/em>of Antonio L\u00f3pez <\/strong>for the central door; and confuses his daughter <\/em>and his grandson<\/em> with his wife <\/em>and his son<\/em> for the sides).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    • He establishes a line of censorship of the artist’s freedom to choose motifs and models, assuming that a relationship with his inner circle or family delights the artistic work, making a sweeping half history of art.<\/li>
    • He argues populist and topical arguments such as that hunger and lack of heating would be a better destination for the required investment (if applied, they would have prevented the foundation of the cathedral itself and its successive updates).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      • He alludes to the absence of bureaucratic authorizations or incomplete administrative processes, which may well be true, although probably redressable (well, do not say loudly that it is the Cathedral of Burgos<\/strong> that makes Unesco <\/strong>and not the other way around, as in so many similar agencies).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        But there is no constructive criticism of the project or of Antonio L\u00f3pez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Tom\u00e1s Nevinson <\/strong>defines one of the techniques of populism well. Without a doubt the project of the new doors by Antonio L\u00f3pez <\/strong>can include improved technical, artistic or management aspects, and procedures to be completed. Perhaps that is their little truth, enough for some to consider their whole manifesto credible and even irrefutable<\/em>, but not all of them: me – and perhaps a few more – no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
